| Thousands of men and women are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with physical disabilities and traumatic injuries. For many, regaining mobility and independence is a constant struggle as they try to transition back to the civilian world. Everyday tasks that could once be performed without thought are now time consuming and frustrating. For these wounded warriors, the most advanced technology capable of transforming their lives now comes with a cold nose and a warm heart. Carolina Canines for Service (CCFS) is a non-profit health and human services organization that train service dogs for people with disabilities. In 2008, CCFS launched a national pilot program, Canines for Veterans, to train rescue dogs from local shelters to assist wounded veterans. Operating entirely on private donations, CCFS trains prisoners at the Camp Lejeune brig in Jacksonville, NC. to raise and train each service dog. A Carolina Canine service dog is a constant companion that can perform more than 70 tasks for the wounded veteran, including retrieving and carrying objects, opening doors, helping with stress and balance difficulties, as well as providing a bridge back to society. They can also: pull their partner in a wheelchair, push elevator buttons and even transfer money at the grocery store. They provide social support by acting as a bridge to conversation and acceptance. When a service dog accompanies a wounded veteran, the focus is on the dog, not the disability. The dogs are a souce of love and companionship, Both the veteran and the dog are a team and make the transition back to independence together. As of July, 2009, CCFS has placed 8 service dogswith wounded veterans! |
